Newport Country Club to Play Host to the 2020 U.S. Senior Open

The United States Senior Open Championship will not be leaving the region for long once the 38th annual competition concludes at Salem Country Club on July 2.

The United States Golf Association announced on April 25th that the 2020 U.S. Senior Open will be contested at Newport (R.I.,) Country Club, one of the organization’s five founding clubs in 1895 and the first to host a U.S. Senior Open.

After Salem Country Club hosted the U.S. Senior Open in 2001 and Caves Valley, outside Baltimore, hosted the event in 2002, the U.S. Senior Open returns to the east coast for the first time in 15 years in 2017, then returns to New England a mere three years later at Newport.

Newport hosted the first USGA Amateur and Open Championships in 1895, the 1995 U.S. Amateur and the 2006 U.S. Women’s Open.

The one other U.S. Senior Open contested in New England was the 1987 event at Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield, Conn.
